First I’ll Go Over Bathtub Drain Rust Hole Repair.

This happens from having a leaking tub drain. Either the plumbers putty dried out or water leaking from overflow running down and settling around the drain, keeping the area moist.

No Hole Yet But Will Have One Soon.

Even thou there is no hole yet, the metal can become so thin the area often needs to be removed and patched. This tub was refinished poorly and is peeling as well. Originally when the tub was refinished, the drain should have been removed to remove rust. Which was not done.

Here I’ve cut out the bad rusted metal out, which is critical as any remaining rust will return. Opening up the area around the drain & overflow to allow new metal to be fiber-glassed in.

New Metal For The Gasket To Mate To.

I use brass metal rings as they won’t ever rust out again. Here is our metal ring being attached to our fiberglass cloth.

Starting the bathtub drain rust hole repair. The area around the drain was hammered down so the patch would be below the surface to avoid making a hump preventing the tub from draining properly. The fiberglass cloth bridges the open space. The new metal is mated with the plumbing gasket below.

I applied a thick layer of reinforced fiberglass gel to build up the repair. Not worried about prettiness yet.

Conical Shape Made For Drain To Sit Into.

We now have a thick strong structural repair that allows the water to drain with the proper conical shape machined for the new drain.

Bathtub overflow rust hole repair: Just like our tub drain, I’ve glassed in a new metal ring for the gasket to mate with and bridge the hole with fiberglass cloth. Here we are not concerned with being flat with the tub as we were with the drain. I’ll make a factory looking pad for the overflow to sit on.

Reinforced Fiberglass Gel Used To Build Up The Repair.

Now we have applied more of our fiberglass gel to build up the repair for strength and to make the pad for the overflow plate to sit on.

I’m not concerned with prettiness yet. Structural integrity & getting the basic shape right is the prime concern.

With the marine grade sanding filler applied to flare out to meet the tub and completely sanded smooth we have a nice pad for the overflow to sit on which once refinished will provide a strong factory looking repair.
