I always recommend using Hardie Backer Board or Wonder Board. It’s a cement and fiber product that would have prevented this problem. Wonder Board is only slightly more expensive than drywall board to purchase and adds some to labor cost as it is a bit more work to cut, but absolutely worth it.

Drywall or Green-board are not the appropriate products in a wet environment, like in a bathroom.
