Angies List Reviews Gets A BIG FAT F… Why Would They Rather Make Money Over Your Safety?
Here you’ll find my review on Angies List. A company on Angie’s List was advertising a “BIG DEAL”
I noticed their Home Improvement Number was at least 10 years older than mine.
Which I didn’t believe true and I did an audit on them to review their licensing and found they were using Fake Home Improvement numbers and that their Business License was Forfeited.
I notified Angie’s list and you would think that a company being blatantly deceitful like this would be grounds for immediately removal from the list, until they got the proper licensing, and insurance wouldn’t you?
Well you’d be wrong!… This company was running a constant “Big Deal” and Angies List collects 25% of the revenue.
This “Company” was not a company at all, no business license, fake Home Improvement number and no insurance.
A conflict of interest, in that Angies List would continue to promote a known deceitful company at the expense and safety of its members is incomprehensible.
You would have been, held responsible as the employer and sued if an injury happened. Think your homeowner’s policy would protect you and cover it? You’re responsible for checking Certificates of Insurance.
An accidental trip down the stairs resulting in a broken neck or back could end up costing you everything. Even a broken arm with a couple 3 months off work might go into the tens of thousands.
Angies list did contact the company in question and request they provide proper licensing. Unfortunately, they got extension after extension.
In fact Angies List even gave them their Super Service Award, after having known, thereby driving more traffic to them.
Why Would They Rather Make Money Over Your Safety? Knowingly awards unlicensed contractor super service award, while collecting 25% from their “BIG DEAL” Here you’ll find my review on Angies List. A company on Angie’s List was advertising a “BIG Deal” with no business license…
Angie’s List Members should expect better for their membership then having Angie’s list promoting this company with their “Big Deal” thus putting you in jeopardy, should your home be damaged or an injury occurs by and UN-licensed, UN-insured fake company!
Always do your homework anytime you hire a contractor by checking their licensing and ask for a “Certificate of Insurance”.
Ms. Hicks states that no business can pay to be on
Angie’s List is true, here’s what they don’t tell you.
- They charge Contractors thousands for placement at the top of a listing.
- They take 25% of “BIG DEALS”.
- Charged to be found by KEY WORDS.
- Charged to be in the HONOR ROLL in their Magazine.
- Charged to be able to offer a COUPON.
- Charge for “STORE FRONTS”.
- Charge for MAILINGS.
- While Members pay a small membership – Contractors can pay thousands to be in front if they want any action from members.
- Angies List works both sides of this street and contractors have no re-course when some members blatantly lie.
It would be a big mistake to assume Angie’s List Reviews is there to protect its members. In my guesstimate earns 80% of their income from business, so where does their loyalty really lie?
It took 4 months of hounding Angie’s list to get this “Company” removed. For one I could not complete against a company not playing by the rules and a larger concern was Angie’s List was putting its members at risk.
I wonder if I had not been such a pain to them, if they ever would have taken action?

Hi Jason Here is the information for the Company showing fraudulent numbers licensing information that does not come up in the License Look up for Maryland. You’re putting your members at risk! As well I cannot compete against companies not paying taxes, or insurance!

Hi Jason, I was curious how long a period you guys give a company to produce licensing documentation? Cus it’s coming up on 10 weeks now. American Tub Tile Running the Big Deal over and over plus is there any way for you all to check that they are not giving a Big Deal as they do not really charge $475.00 normally. Rather misleading advertising. Like you said earlier we all need to play by the same rules.

Hi Jason,
American Tub & Tile is in a compliance plan. In this particular case, this company has shown documentation of progress towards obtaining the license. If a company can show documentation of progress, we will extend their deadline as in many cases the SPIDs are waiting for a response from a governmental department, which can take some time.
Here is the description of the compliance plan that we would send in similar inquiries:
Companies that are investigated by our licensing department are given the opportunity to contest our audit results. They can provide proper license documentation, prove exemption from the law, or indicate an intention to secure the appropriate license(s). If the company agrees to obtain the required credentials, the Licensing Department outlines the necessary requirement(s) for compliance in their location and trade/occupation/profession and will set a deadline based on the steps required to obtain their license(s).
We also ask the companies to update their license attestation on their Angie’s List company profile to reflect that they are in the process of obtaining the required licenses.
Companies that do not have their licenses by the deadline that is set are subject to penalties. Penalties include removal from category search on our website and the revocation of advertising and Super Service Award privileges.
Feel free to forward any or all the information in any way you’d like. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely, Ben
Angie’s List Trade Licensing

Attention Ben
CC: Jason
Thanks for checking on American Tub & Tile again. This contractor is just stalling. They have had their business licensed forfeited. Are not paying taxes and hold no business or home improvement license. Where using fake numbers. Consistently running their “Big Deal”, which is the normal price they charge. Everything about them is a sham. Yet we are coming up on 2 months and they are still scamming your members.
I would not be surprised if they are not even Insured. Putting your members at risk in the event of an accident.
I believe you’re doing your members a disservice allowing this to go on for so long. Kick them loose and when or if they get themselves together they can come back in. Or at least put a warning on their status other than “My license application is in progress” Which few will see.
Paul

Ben,
So if American tub and tile doesn’t show the appropriate license. What happens next?
If he shows intent is that good enough to keep him going? (hopefully not because he is operating illegally)
Thank you, Jason

UP-DATE: Finally on February 20th 2013 over 4 months later they removed this company from their list. Then a sales rep called and wanted to know if I would run the “BIG DEAL” as they lost a lot of revenue from losing this contractor…

Now Angie ‘s List is offering free memberships which makes me think their revenue is from business ads and commissions Angie’s List makes. I’m skeptical the list can be relied upon.
