What Are Bathtub Liners Made From? There Are Varieties Of Choices From Low Grade To Premium.
Do you pay attention to what are bathtub liners made of and the material the company you’re considering is using?
If not you should be, here’s why.
If you’re looking for a cheap, short term fix then you’ll probably choose PVC, Vinyl (Poly vinyl chloride) or Polystyrene. Bathtub liners made of PVC, Vinyl and Polystyrene are relatively cheap plastics.
These are at the low-end in quality and lower in gloss. PVC, Vinyl and Polystyrene are a softer materials, scratch and damage easier and will not hold up as well over time.
100% ABS Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene is practically indestructible. ABS is extremely tough and durable and is used to make football helmets. And a great choice on what to have your bathtub liner made from.
Several of its weaknesses for use as a bathtub liner or wall surround, it does not hold up as well with UV exposure, has less optical clarity, has a lower gloss, susceptible to moisture penetration at 1% and generally not used for sanitary products for these reasons. ABS is less expensive than Acrylic
100% Acrylic plastics are expensive but tough and make for a great sanitary surface, but don’t have the impact strength of ABS. Acrylics are brittle and crack easily. Acrylics are used to make windshields for motor cycles and airplanes among other things. 100% Acrylic, being brittle is a poor choice as well. So what is the ultimate bathtub liner made of?
Bathtub liners made from a composite – is a combination laminate where 85% ABS, used for the backbone to provide strength and dimensional stability then capped with 15% acrylic for sanitary, durability and aesthetic appeal.
Bathtub liners made of Acrylic capped ABS is designed specifically for bathroom applications, providing excellent scratch resistance and good impact performance with its surface aspect designed specifically for the sanitary market.

Thank you so much for this amazing education. Extremely useful information and very clearly describing the technical details. Unfortunately BCI could not confirm regarding their Acrylic capped ABS but directed me to their dealer who basically does not do liners and indicated that liners are not a good long term solution.
