How to get the best performance, adhesion and aesthetics when refinishing your bathtub or tile.
EXCLUSIVE Hydrophobic Additive: This water-hating additive creates a Teflon-like surface built into our TubPotion coatings. Water is actually repelled from the surface helping to keep your tub or tile sparkling clean.
Left untreated water spreads out clinging to the surface. Right side treated with TubPotion #16 magically repels the water. Built into the coating for years of lasting protection & easy cleaning.
Hardware & Caulk Removal: Not all bathroom refinishers will remove your caulking or even the overflow during refinishing? Some will just coat right over it.
Old caulking absolutely should be removed and the overflow plate when possible (some are threaded on & can’t be removed due to being seized). Escutcheons on tile walls and tub drain removal makes for a better-looking and longer-lasting job by having the coating sealed under the hardware.

Removal Of A Failed Refinishing: Next is a critical factor that few refinishers will do?
Should you have a previously refinished tub or tile that is failing it should be chemically stripped off to the original surface. Why?… Would you put a new roof on your home over rotten wood? Of course not, I hope? Most refinishers will simply sand around the failed area and apply their coating over the remainder of the failed coating.
This is a cheap shortcut that we will not do. Always be sure they remove all of the failed coatings.
Why don’t all refinishers strip off the failed coating? They quoted you a low ball price, and chemical stripper is expensive and adds one or more hours to the job. The discount refinishers are looking for all the shortcuts they can. Plus, using a chemical stripper requires additional safety and protective equipment.

Etching The Surface: Why don’t refinishers etch the surface? Etching provides mechanic adhesion allowing the coating a place to “Grip on too” porcelain & enameled tubs cannot be etched by sanding as acrylic and fiberglass tubs can. An acid solution must be used and care is taken to avoid damaging surrounding areas.
Not etching is again one of the shortcuts they take. When asked about this they’ll use anti-logic to convince you their doing you a favor. Etching cleans and creates a bonding surface, critical for lasting performance. Even big franchises like Miracle Method short the process. In this video I prove the point beyond doubt.
Why would we go to the trouble, expense and training if HF Acid did not provide a benefit to you?
If they do fill the chips many use cheap Bondo filler instead of marine grade polyester, which is completely waterproof…
Why don’t they Cost More?… cheap price means cheap materials every time.
For an aesthetic repair chips and damage should be filled with marine grade polyester filler.
Your bathroom will be coated and damaged by this practice.
Another issue is improper ventilation or none at all?
Ventilation equipment pulls the chemical odors out from the bathroom and exhausts them outside.
Some use a box fan not rated of flammable exhausting. Others use inadequate small units which don’t provide enough power.
I recommend the 3000 Cubic foot per minute ventilation and always recommend exhausting to a window away from the bathroom.
Room fully masked off, while fixture is being coated.
Ventilate the odors with a powerful extractor to a room away from the project.
High-quality Silane can be applied before the coating or even added to the coating to help form a permanent bond.
Again often not used… Why? Again cost… cheap price = cheap job.
TubPotion process & coatings holds up to the razor blade test.
I recommend polyester bonding primer over the usual treatment of epoxy primer which is most often used as it is very low cost compared to polyester.
With Etching – Silane – Primer, you get what I affectionately call “Triple Adhesion” for truly long-lasting performance.
Don’t confuse TubPotion process with painting your tub.
Best Bathtub Refinishing Company Different Bath Tub Refinishing Coatings Cure Between 4 And 48 Hours… Why?
TubPotion #10 Our Aliphatic (non-yellowing) high-performance polyester catalyst. Creates a chemical reaction in our bathtub refinishing coatings, allowing them to achieve full cure in just 24 hours.
Which is the perfect balance in, set time. for you and the coating in convenience and durability.
*Beware of bathtub refinishers touting 4 to 12-hour cure, they’re using an accelerator in the polyurethane that makes the coatings brittle and chip easily and which I don’t recommend.
The 48-hour cure is an epoxy that is slow to set up. Yellow with time and tend to be easily damaged. Nor do they provide the texture-free porcelain look of TubPotion polyester coatings.

Gives you the performance of silicon but is completely paint-able. This is important should you wish to paint up against the caulk as silicone is not paint-able. And acrylic latex caulk shrinks as it dry’s and can crack as well yellow over time. GE 7000 is slightly off white which we cannot control.
