Let me go into more detail with the following Concrete Sink Refinishing Project – Thou it’s more of a Restoration over what others do “Just Paint Your Concrete Sink?” Which really doesn’t work.
Concrete sink damaged by hard water and decades of use in awful shape and quite the embarrassment to our homeowner.
Filling erosion, chips & cracks in the concrete surface before refinishing.
Smoothing out the rough surface.
We came in, and through a preparations process removed the mineral build-up with an etching treatment, that chemically cleans the mineral deposits and creates an etched surface allowing for “Mechanical Adhesion”.
Then cracks are Vee’d out and the nicks – chips – erosion are filled in using a marine grade filler and everything is sanded smooth. Once prepped we mask off the area and start applying the TubPotion Coating System.
Which involves using a high tech adhesion promoter TubPotion #8. Depending on the Multi-Stone selected several coats of the correct shade of our TubPotion #11 polyester bonding primer to seal up the body work done.
Then with application skill apply the stone effect. Once dried a light sanding to help smooth out the Multi-Stone. Then this is extremely important, that multiple coats of clear are added.
You’ll love the durability and lasting glossy beauty of TubPotion # 14 polyester clear coat. The clear coat prevents bleach products used in the washing of cloths from removing the color from the coating, as bleach does.

Yes you can do it in a solid color but the multistone really helps to hide surface defects and surface cracks. I don’t care how much prep you do, the cement will show tons of defects. So the primer and clear coat can be rolled on but if you use the multistone it must be sprayed.

I thought cured polyester resin was not recommended for use with strong acids and alkalies. Something change since I finished thermoset plastics class at College of Dupage in the 70’s?
Mild HC 5% is water-soluble along with using a polyester polyurethane hybrid sprayable or rollable coating, which is not a “polyester Resin” but provides the strength and water submerging qualities of polyester without the need of a mould like Gel Coats. A lot has changed in coating chemistry since the 70’s Though I’m sure Ph imbalance and polyester resin still don’t play well with each other. I’m a firm believer in testing the adhesion qualities and time tested results having providing these services for over 30 years tells me I’m doing something right. My degree in Time Tested from the University of HardKnocks has taught me to think outside the box.
